History is important but it can easily descend into a dull series of dates. I intended this project to be more personal than a simple history book and one which the audience could easily relate to.
I wanted to bring the life of George Orwell to life through a series of different files. I chose George Orwell because he's heroic and also politically relevant today. I designed and illustrated a passport, a photo album and a political flyer. Together these tell the story of Orwell's life
and his politics.
Each of these documents was designed to be used repeatedly used which is why I choose paper stock which is thicker than would be authentic.
The Photo Album
This book is made to emulate real old photo albums of the early 20th century but with thicker pages. The textured transparent sheets which serve as page protectors are printed with George Orwell's life story and are directly relevant to the illustrated ‘photographs’ which surround it.
For these 'photographs' I created almost 30 greyscale illustrations in a fun, modern style
which show the man at different points of his life.
This little book is designed to resemble actual British passports from the 1920s. As the purpose
of this book is to inform, I've included extra information which would not appear in an actual passport but is true to the design style. I choose a cover material which resembles leather in texture. I hand-stitched the pages together by hand.
I designed this to look like a leaflet of the period which had been mass-printed on the cheap. I researched WW2 leaflets which gave me an idea
of what could be done on a budget.
